The Preble Forensics Club

December 2, 2021
Preble High School has a very wide variety of clubs, there is something for almost everyone. This includes those interested in public speaking, debate, theater, and film, whether for a potential career path or just for fun. The Preble forensics club is a public speaking and performing activity available to all Preble students who are interested in it. The club is run by Mr. Michael Schuh and Ms. Shayna Horacek, who are both staff at Preble. There will be an introductory meeting for new members held on December 7th, and the meeting for returning students will be on the 8th, both of them being held in room 123.
Preble’s forensics team is part of the ‘Wisconsin High School Forensics Association’, and as such, has three competitions in the spring. After not being able to perform in person for their previous season, Ms. Horacek says that she and Mr. Schuh hope for a bigger turnout now that they are allowed to be in person again this year. “The goal is 30 kids this year, we’re limited to 25 entries for our competitions but there are several categories that we could have more than one student in,” Horacek states. Students can perform poetry, literature, plays, and speeches in this activity. Daily attendance is not required, nor is it necessarily suggested. Those involved sign up for what days work for them, giving the club a very flexible schedule.
Mr. Schuh states, “Another goal is to bring the kids together as a team.” Schuh also mentions that the forensics is generally more of an individual activity and that the team is hopefully going to spend the night in Madison to bond. Everyone competes individually by entry, so the whole team could potentially make it to state. The season ends in April after the state competition, in which students have the option to compete virtually again this year. Forensics builds life skills and is a great addition to any resume.
